Nutritional Value of Prey Items for Snakes
This page has been moved to : Nutritional Value of Prey Items for Snakes
Any dedicated pet owner wants the best for their pets. Many wonder if the food they are providing has all the nutrients required for their continued wellbeing.
Snakes consume whole prey items like Mice, Rats, and Chicks. Because they digest nearly the entire content of their prey, they receive the full nutritional value of the prey, and in most cases this all they need.
We do, however, recommend supplementing younger prey items (such as pinkies, pups and chicks) with calcium as these young prey items usually have much lower levels of calcium than their adult equivellant. Also, as their livers have yet to develop, we recommend using a calcium supplement with added Vitamin D3 which will help your snake metabolise the calcium.
Of course, over supplementing can be just as dangerous as under supplementing. To avoid using too much of the supplement, simply dip the head of the prey item into the calcium powder so that it has a white "cap." Using this method, we have never had any problems with over supplementing.
Below are a few tables listing the nutritional value of common prey items for snakes and includes other useful information such as Fat, Energy and various Minerals.
